Hungarian Opposition Queries Reports That State Wants Monopoly Over Spirits

The opposition wants to know the government’s reasons behind reported plans to make the retail trade of alcohol a state monopoly. Viktor Szigetvári, the co-leader of the E-PM party, called on cabinet chief János Lázár and economy minister Mihály Varga to indicate whether the press report was correct and if so, to reveal what the purpose of the plan was.

Tibor Navracsics, Hungary’s foreign minister, has been selected to serve as EU commissioner for education, culture, youth and citizenship, the commission announced on its website on Wednesday. Hungary nominated him to the new European Commission headed by Jean-Claude Juncker in July.
