Ever since Magyar Nemzet received a facsimile of the Azeri promises concerning Ramil Safarov’s continued prison sentence, people in the opposition press kept asking why the Hungarian government was silent on the issue. If the Azeris went back on their word, why don’t the Hungarians protest and condemn the action of Azerbaijan?

The Government of Hungary and the Jewish Heritage of Hungary Public Endowment (MAZSÖK) refuse the allegations made by Claims Conference in its latest statement, and call upon the organisation to refrain from misleading, intentionally misguiding and provoking fear in international public opinion and Holocaust survivors living abroad who receive compensation funds from the Hungarian State.

Last Sunday saw the start of the 15th Jewish Summer Festival – one of Budapest’s most 'prestigious annual programmes of cultural events'. Every year the festival attracts tens of thousands of local visitors and tourists to the capital and its synagogue, which is said to be one of Europe’s most beautiful. The Hungarian Government has also provided funding for this programme of cultural events.
