Retail store operator Palóc Nagykereskedelmi, which announced last week that Hungarian-owned retail chain CBA had canceled its franchise contract for all its 80 stores, reportedly voluntarily filed for bankruptcy at a local court in Balassagyarmat yesterday. Hungary is planning to ban brand logos from cigarette packaging from next May, in favour of a uniform look for all brands, featuring only text, Prime Minister’s Office state secretary Balázs Sonkodi told news website Index. This exceeds the requirements of the EU’s Tobacco Product Directive, which stipulates that 65% of the two largest faces of cigarette packages must be covered by warnings.
