Mandatory Medical Chamber Membership for Doctors in Hungary to be reinstated
- 4 Sep 2026 7:26 AM
Addressing a government press briefing, Anita Kobol noted that in 2023, a political conflict had effectively paralysed the chamber's operations under the previous government. She said the current government has now decided to restore its powers.
She said that since the previous government "stripped away" the chamber's powers, there had been no representative forum where doctors could voice concerns or proposals about the sector, and the body had lost its right to review health-care-related legislation.
In the future, only members of the Hungarian Medical Chamber will be allowed to practise medicine, Kobol said, adding that the reinstatement of mandatory membership will also apply to health-care workers with advanced vocational training.
She said the legislative amendment aimed to strengthen professional self-governance and further improve patient safety and professional standards. The government will submit the related bill for public consultation, she added.
