Born in 1983, Éva Polgár started her piano studies in 1990. In 2001, she was admitted to the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where her teacher was Hamsa Al-Wadi Juis. Dr. Katalin Varga was initially denied a university place back in 1977 since her father worked at the US Embassy in Budapest and so her family were considered a 'political risk'. Therefore she started work with a technical firm and learnt computer skills from practical experience.
