Hungary’s opposition E-PM alliance urged the government to scrap plans of levying a tax on internet data transfers in a statement released today. According to estimates, the government’s plans mean that every downloaded gigabyte would cost Hungarian internet service providers HUF 150, and many believe ISPs would simply pass the tax on to users.

Magyar Telekom will dismiss 500 of its 7,500 employees, having reached agreement with its unions, the company said on Monday. Most of the workers will leave at the end of the year, reports Napi Gazdaság. The cuts do not include any retirements nor cuts in executive staff.

"Some 1,200 employees of Nokia received notices of dismissal yesterday, as the mobile-phone maker began the first wave of job cuts at its Komárom factory. The Finnish company announced layoffs of 2,300, roughly half of the Hungarian workforce, in February as it moves production of smart phones closer to suppliers and markets in Asia.
