Buildings Damaged, Tens Of Thousands Without Electricity In Hungary In Gale-Force Winds

Over 100 residential buildings and 20 public buildings have been damaged and several tens of thousands of people are without electricity as a consequence of gale-force winds that continued throughout Hungary on Thursday, the disaster management authority said. Most damage was caused in roofs and chimneys and trees fell over air cables in many places.

Two people died, more than 40 people sustained injuries and nearly 6,000 cars were stranded on public roads due to the snowstorm on Friday. The two were killed when over 50 vehicles collided in a snarl-up at Szabadbattyán near Lake Balaton on the M7 motorway.

A 27-year-old fire-fighter died when a fire engine overturned between Sándorfalva and Ópusztaszer, Csongrád county, on Wednesday. Another fire-fighter was taken to Szeged clinic with a collarbone fracture and four others with bruises and all were released.
