Former Embassy Marine Security Guard Visits Budapest
Donald D. Erwin, who served as a Marine Security Guard at the U.S. Legation to Hungary from January 1956 to 1957 returned to Hungary last week for the first time since 1957. He was an honored guest at the November 8 Marine Corps Ball, where he was served a piece of the Marines’ birthday cake in honor of his being the oldest Marine present

In accordance with Marine Corps tradition, he then handed a piece of cake to the youngest Marine present, to symbolize the passing of wisdom and experience from generation to generation. We are grateful for the service of Mr. Erwin, and all our American Veterans, and we are thankful that Mr. Erwin was able to join us here in Budapest for this special celebration.

During his stay in Hungary, Mr. Erwin gave an interview to the Hungarian magazine Blikk, in which he shares his memories and his photos of the 1956 Uprising.
