An “invoice factory” in Debrecen has led detectives of the National Tax and Customs Office to an industrial-scale motor oil adulteration operation, suspected of defrauding the government of nearly Ft 1.5 billion worth of VAT. Six suspects have been questioned, of whom five are in custody.

Combined first-quarter after-tax profit of Hungarian banks rose 209% compared to the same period a year earlier, reaching HUF 191.4 billion, data released by the National Bank of Hungary (MNB) today show, according to Hungarian news agency MTI.

The Budapest city council will in the future continue to support the Budapest Festival Orchestra to the extent that its budget permits, Budapest Mayor István Tarlós said. Last month, the Municipal Assembly voted to cut funding for the orchestra by 200 million forints (EUR 940,000) to 60 million.

Prices for public catering services are expected to drop as a result of the planned nationalisation of such services, daily Magyar Idők reported. Talks have already started about transferring control over all public catering services from local councils to the state. Government office chief János Lázár said prices could drop as a result of the move.

Lawmakers approved a bill that establishes national building societies and adds to members’ savings with a state subsidy. The bill, submitted just a day earlier by Antal Rogán, the prime minister’s cabinet chief, was approved in an expedited procedure with 113 votes in favour, 46 against and no abstentions.
