A Hungarian nurse has spoken out about the horrors of a US-led bombing of a hospital in the Afghan town of Kunduz on Saturday. Afghan authorities said Taliban rebels had been hiding in the building after taking over the city last week and that is why the hospital had become a target for the bombing. The bombing killed 22 people, 10 of them patients and 12 from the hospital staff.

Béla Biszku, the interior minister in 1956, pleaded innocent to charges of war crimes when a new trial began on Friday. Biszku is accused of abetting the shooting of protesters by state security officials at Nyugati tér and in Salgótarján in December 1956, as well as failing to investigate a raid in 1957 and denying Communist crimes.

Two Hungarian Gripen fighter planes were alerted on Thursday because of a Boeing 767 Canadian airliner, the Defence Ministry told state news agency MTI. The aircraft entered Slovak air space without contacting Slovak air control. The pilots still did not get in touch with Slovak air control after Slovak fighter planes intercepted the plane.

The maintenance of state-run all news channel M1, launched in March, is costing state media manager MTVA Ft 4.3 billion this year, Népszabadság reports. The new sports channel M4, launched in July, is costing Ft 5.4 billion. Due to the rising costs, the government will assume Ft 47.2 billion of debts from state media. MTVA’s budget for this year is Ft 80 billion.

Hungary will host the first East Central European world music expo Womex on October 21-25, it was announced yesterday. Human Resources Ministry state secretary Péter Hoppál told a press briefing at the Palace of Arts that the festival will have an appropriate home in the country of Bartók and Kodály. The iconic confectionary Jégbüfé, operating since the 1950s on Ferenciek tere in downtown Budapest, will soon reopen in nearby Petõfi utca, Magyar Idõk has learnt. The shop will be somewhat smaller and will have a café and a VIP section. The walls will be decorated with pictures taken by French photographer Bruno Borel in the Jégbüfé since 1989.
