Hungary plans to extend a ban on the construction of big shopping centres in spite of an infringement procedure launched by the European Commission, daily Magyar Nemzet reports. Kristóf Szatmáry, state secretary at the economy ministry, told the paper that the continuation of the ban was justified.

Large retailers are lobbying to relax a regulation banning the construction of new shopping centres larger than 300m², Napi Gazdaság writes. The government has not commented on whether the temporary ban introduced on January 1, 2012 would be terminated by the original deadline of December 31, 2014 or be extended.

The European Commission is examining Hungary’s land law, and if it finds it incompatible with EU law it will take steps to urge its amendment. Austrian Farm Minister Andrä Rupprechter complained to his Hungarian counterpart, Sándor Fazekas, about the law which, when it is enforced in May, will strip Austrian farmers of their rights to benefit from Hungarian farmland.

For the first time, small size duty free items will be allowed onboard Ryanair aircraft. This new rule comes in to effect as of 1st December 2013 on all flights of Ryanair across their network, including from Budapest Airport.
