Retail sales in Hungary climbed by an annual 1.6% in January 2016, preliminary data released by the Central Statistical Office (KSH) show. Retail sales rose by 2.1% when adjusted for calendar year effects. The unadjusted rise was down from 5.0% in December 2015.

Retail sales in Hungary could come close to 10,000 billion forints this year, the chief secretary of the National Association of Commerce (OKSZ) told public television. Retail sales of household chemicals and cosmetics in Hungary reached 290 billion forints (EUR 919m) in January-October, up 7% from the same period a year earlier, market researcher Nielsen said. Sales of shower gel were up 12%, tissue sales rose 11% and fabric softener sales increased 10%. Stores bigger than 2,500sqm generated 32% of total turnover during the period.
