Following my retirement from the UK Fire Service, we relocated with our young family to Hungary to be closer to my wife's family and enjoy a quieter life in her hometown of Csongrád. It’s a great town blessed with the confluence of two great rivers, the Körös and Tisza, which of course eventually reach the Danube.

Participants in this year’s 'Plastic Cup' (PET Kupa) have collected 8.2 tonnes of waste along an 80km section of the water and floodplains of the Tisza river flowing to Hungary from Ukraine and Romania, the event’s organisers said.

This initiative attracted 320 volunteers, who worked from 16 boats made of plastic bottles. They collected 8-10 tons of garbage along 80km of the Tisza river in the seventh annual PET Cup.

An independent laboratory has found a toxic material in the water of the Tisza River, in a sample taken during an environmental protection campaign, reports indicate. The amount of pollution found in upper reaches of the river in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county was twice the maximum tolerable level.
