Car-Free Access Extended Along Danube Embankment
Car-free access along the Pest lower embankment has been extended, giving pedestrians, runners and cyclists more space to enjoy the Danube waterfront on weekday evenings as well as weekends.

Under the new traffic arrangements announced by the Mayor’s Office, the lower embankment on the Pest side will close to vehicles every weekday from 6:30 pm until 5 am the following morning.

During these hours, the riverside route will be open exclusively to people on foot, bikes and other non-motorised traffic.

The existing weekend closures will continue unchanged, meaning the embankment will remain fully car-free from Friday evening until early Monday morning.

City officials said the decision was based on traffic studies carried out between 2023 and 2025 at more than 30 locations along the embankment. The data showed that vehicle traffic falls significantly in the early evening, while pedestrian activity increases during the warmer months.

According to the city, several alternative starting times were considered before officials settled on the 6:30 pm closure, aiming to avoid peak-hour congestion while still making the riverside more accessible for leisure use.

The temporary system will operate with movable road barriers managed by Budapest Közút. Authorities estimate that closing or reopening the embankment and clearing traffic will take around an hour each time.

The weekday evening closures are currently planned to remain in place until 19 September 2026.

After that, the city is expected to return to the previous weekend-only arrangement, although officials said the schedule could still be adjusted based on traffic patterns and public feedback during the trial period.

Drivers are being advised to plan ahead for evening journeys, while pedestrians and cyclists are encouraged to remain cautious when entering the embankment during transition periods.
