A total of 96 policemen have been sacked for their conduct in autumn 2006, according to a summary provided to the cabinet by Interior Minister Sándor Pintér. Ten uniformed policemen convicted by a court will shortly be removed from the force. The state has paid Ft 270.5 million in compensation to 149 victims for police brutality committed in the autumn of 2006.

Hungary will host this year’s Day of Remembrance of the victims of totalitarian regimes to be held with the participation of EU Member States on 23 August. Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Public Administration and Justice Dr Tibor Navracsics will inform the justice ministers of Member States at the Friday justice session of the Justice and Home Affairs Council meeting to be held on 26-27 April.

The March for Life Foundation organised the first such event in 2002, when 400-500 people turned out. An estimated 10,000 took part in last year’s commemoration.
