'Carmina Burana', Opera House Budapest, 16 April
- 16 Apr 2024 7:00 PM
- contemporary
Scenic cantata, in the original languages, with Hungarian and English surtitles.
O Fortuna. Everyone knows the overwhelmingly powerful opening motifs of Carl Orff's most famous work. What fewer people know is that Carmina Burana was not intended to be an oratorical work, but was instead expressly meant for the stage.
This becomes clear from the piece's (originally Latin) subtitle: “Secular ...
Film Club: 'Deconstructing Harry ', Palace of Arts Budapest, 15 April
- 15 Apr 2024 7:00 PM
- contemporary
Deconstructing Harry is a slightly misleading title. It's true that the film is, in some way, about the deconstruction of the successful writer Harry Block, and how he falls to pieces.
Except Harry's pieces are drawn from his literary work. It is also clear that Harry has sourced the fragments of his writing work from his life: lovers, loves, wives, embarassing or ludicrous moments.

“Easter Showdown Motivated By Jealousy!” “Clown Commits Murder On Stage!”
These are two headlines that might have graced Edoardo Sonzogno’s front pages, and it is the Milanese newspaper publisher and his annual opera-writing competition we have to thank for Italy’s two most popular one-act works.
The two pieces can be considered twin operas as they have much in common, and the works are ...

Richard Wagner: Parsifal, Hungarian State Opera Budapest, 31 March
- 31 Mar 2024 4:00 PM
- classical
In Parsifal, his final music drama, Wagner embeds fear of the temptations of the world and sinful desires into a tale of redemption. The work is indeed a festival play for the stage rather than an opera.
Many viewers – perhaps out of their own fears – criticised Wagner, who wrote both the libretto and the music, for what could be called the piece’s virtue and remarkable complexity, which is ...
