Xpat Review: Italian Restaurant Dazzles In Buda
- 9 Sep 2010 8:35 AM
Admittedly, I approached the evening with some trepidation; another Italian restaurant with, probably, mediocre food and service, and not even easily accessible? Well, okay, after all, it was the company that mattered, not the food.
Well, as happens when least expected, the event wildly exceeded the rather low anticipation. Alessio Kávezo and Restaurant, taking over the former Alex Káveház, was a truly pleasant and unexpected surprise. The venue is small, which makes its menu even more appreciated. Service was excellent, in both Hungarian and English.
We started our meal with beer and wine, and quickly progressed to an innovative starter of six spreads and garnishes, accompanied by what appeared to be homemade bread. Yummy. And the main courses were equally wonderful. My spaghetti had to be homemade pasta, and the shrimp were as fresh as I’ve found in Budapest. My dinner companion’s pasta with fresh fish was also exclaimed over with appropriate compliments. The portions were just right and satiated rather than stuffed.
Even though we were relegated to the smoking room (my friend smokes – and her a doctor!), the waiter checked on us regularly and was attentive without being obtrusive. A final treat of chilled Limoncello topped off our meal and left us both with a feeling of immense satisfaction.
Pestians – Pestites? – Pestarians? – whatever, hie yourselves over to Buda as soon as you have a chance and check out Alessio. It’s near the corner of Gábor Áron u. and easily reachable by car or the Number 5 bus, and a short walk from the Budagyöngye stop of the Number 61 tram. Trust me on this one, folks, it’s well worth the trip.
