"Left-wing and liberal public personalities on Friday celebrated former president Árpád Göncz on his 90th birthday with a serenade outside his home in Budapest. Those present included former prime minister Ferenc Gyurcsány, writer György Konrád, former Free Democrat leader Gábor Kuncze and singer-songwriter János Bródy.
They sang Bródy’s song Ha én rózsa volnék (“If I Were a Rose”). Göncz greeted the well-wishers from the balcony of his home.
A conference organised by the Republikon Institute was held later to pay tribute to Göncz. President Pál Schmitt sent his best wishes from Helsinki.
