Budapest Airport Operator Dismayed By New Tax
"The modification to the land tax approved in Parliament on Monday puts additional burdens on Budapest Airport, which is already fighting for survival, after state airline Malév went bankrupt, the airport operator announced on Tuesday.

The bill proposed by the mayor of Budapest’s 17th District would compel the airport operator to pay an additional Ft 650 million in local tax by reclassifying its land.

Budapest Airport paid Ft 675 million in land tax in 2011. The figure for 2012 was raised to Ft 1.6 billion in December, but the new bill raises the total to Ft 2.25 billion, a spokesman said.

Fidesz MP and Debrecen major Lajos Kósa filed a modification at the last moment yesterday that would lower the tax payable by exempting the runways and security zones of airports.

The final vote on the bill is expected next week."
