Kariko to Receive Honorary Doctorate from the University of Oxford
Hungarian Nobel Prize-winning researcher Katalin Kariko, the first female to receive the prize, will receive an honorary degree from the University of Oxford in June, after receiving similar degrees from two US universities in May, according to information from the University of Szeged (SZTE), in southern Hungary.

SZTE said in a statement that Kariko is one of seven scientists to be recognised by Oxford for her pioneering work on RNA immunogenicity, which laid the foundation for mRNA vaccine technology used in Covid-19 vaccines and revolutionised prospects for vaccines and protein-replacement therapies.

Meanwhile, on May 14, the scientist will receive an honorary degree at the medical faculty of Philadelphia's Drexel University and address its graduation ceremony and another honorary degree from Johns Hopkins University on May 21, as a guest of honour at a series of events marking the university's 150th anniversary.

Kariko’s first honorary doctorate came from her alma mater, the University of Szeged, on September 4, 2021, during the national academic year opening ceremony.

Five years later, in June 2026, she will don her 23rd honorary doctoral robe at Oxford, marking another milestone for one of the most influential scientists of our time, the statement concluded.

Nobel laureate Kariko attends exhibition opening of outstanding Hungarian scientists in Washington

Nobel Prize-winning research biologist Katalin Kariko attended the opening of an open-air exhibition entitled Martians, featuring outstanding figures in Hungarian science, in downtown Washington on Sunday local time.

The Hungarian-made installation on display in front of the Kossuth House, the Hungarian Cultural Centre is also partly linked to the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States.

Many of the scientists featured in the interactive exhibition made their outstanding achievements in the United States or studied and researched there.

Kariko told MTI at the event that outstanding Hungarian scientific achievements were making contributions to American science even in the current period, adding that science was a common language for all those who practice it.

Kariko will receive an award at the Hungarian American Coalition's Super Gala event held at the Library of Congress next to the Capitol to mark the 250th anniversary of US independence.

Balazs Gulyas, President of the HUN-REN Hungarian Research Network, said the exhibition showcased 55 outstanding Hungarian scientists, including Nobel laureates, who have contributed in some way to the advancement of human knowledge.

Margo Kosa, head of the Hungarian Brand Cultural Association, which set up the exhibition, said in a statement that after the US capital, the Martians exhibition will tour the United States and is scheduled to travel to Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Daytona Beach and Chicago.
