Hungary's Cabinet Rejects Seuso Treasure Offer
- 23 Aug 2012 9:00 AM
Culture state secretary László L. Simon has dismissed a proposal by art collector István Zelnik to have the state buy part of the Seuso hoard of Roman treasure. In an interview with weekly Heti Válasz, Simon said Zelnik has not presented any evidence to verify that he is the legitimate owner of the disputed treasure.
Zelnik has offered to bring the hoard to Hungary, open a museum and bequeath the treasure to the Hungarian state if the latter is prepared to temporarily waive its claim to the artefacts.
Simon said he hopes that the treasure could be returned to Hungary, where it was unearthed, within the foreseeable future as a result of serious scholarly work.
