St. Paddy’s Day Celebrated in Budapest Again in Fine Irish Style
A vibrant wave of green swept through Budapest as Szabadság tér came alive with the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day. The city centre square buzzed with energy, hosting a full day of music, dance, family-friendly activities, and a lively parade that drew crowds to celebrate Irish culture in the heart of the capital.

From late morning through to early evening, Szabadság Square became the focal point of the festivities. According to the official programme, events ran from 11:00 to 18:00, with the square serving as both the starting point and final destination of the parade route.

Throughout the day, the stage featured a varied line-up of performances, reflecting both Irish traditions and local talent. Performers included Nightingale, Barbara Dance Academy, the Central European Irish Dance Academy, The 12 Pins Session Band, Iredance and Folk Roses, offering a continuous programme that kept visitors engaged across the afternoon.

Beyond the main stage, there was plenty to explore. Highlights included a Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) football demonstration and a Red Setters dog display, while families had access to a wide range of activities such as face painting, balloon entertainment, children’s improvisation workshops and table football.

Organisers had announced a schedule adjustment in advance, noting that due to the number of events taking place across Budapest on the same day, the parade would begin later than usual. The St. Patrick’s Day Parade set off at 17:00, following a warm-up performance from a brass band and majorettes starting at 16:30, which helped build anticipation among the crowd.

The event once again demonstrated the growing popularity of Irish cultural celebrations in the Hungarian capital, bringing together residents and visitors in one of downtown Budapest’s most recognisable public spaces.

Organised by the Irish-Hungarian Business Circle, the celebration also reflected the organisation’s ongoing work to strengthen business, cultural and community ties between the two countries.

Among the notable attendees was Ireland’s Ambassador to Hungary, Ragnar Almqvist, whose presence added a diplomatic dimension to the occasion, underlining the friendly and well-established relationship between Ireland and Hungary.
