Hungary's PM Orbán Declares Higher Education Free
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has declared higher education completely free for all eligible students, reversing an earlier stance in a surprise announcement at the weekend. Those who meet requirements for higher education and wish to study and then work in Hungary “will be able to pursue free college and university education without accumulating any debt,” Orbán said in a video message posted on Facebook.

The announcement followed consultations which Orbán held with members of the Fidesz youth section in a pub on Saturday, government spokesman András Giró-Szász said.

The cabinet will abolish compulsory numbers of students in universities and colleges, Human Resources Minister Zoltán Balog announced on Sunday. It is not preparing to introduce tuition fees, and if students agree to work in Hungary after getting their degree, the state will pay their full educational costs, he said, confirming the prime minister’s remarks. The government has heard the students’ message that they should not begin their life with debts, he underscored.
