CoE Monitoring Proposal Dropped Against Hungary

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe dropped plans to launch a monitoring procedure against Hungary. The Assembly opted instead for “closely following” developments in the country.
Originally, the proposal suggested that the Council should start a monitoring procedure due to concerns over the rule of law in Hungary, following the adoption of the fourth amendment to the Fundamental Law of Hungary. Such a procedure would have been the first against an EU member state.
