Hungary's Socialists Reject Ex-Leader Gyurcsány
The Socialist Party will not form an election alliance with the Democratic Coalition because its leader Ferenc Gyurcsány alienates too many voters, party president Attila Mesterházy said yesterday after negotiations had failed.

Addressing a party meeting, he said undecided voters will have to be won over in the 2014 elections, but Socialist leaders believe that a close association with Gyurcsány would dissuade many.

Mesterházy stressed the renewal of his party as he answered questions from left-wing supporters at the party headquarters.

He said the party has learned from past mistakes of Socialist governing, and has renewed its policies and leadership.
