2014 Elections To Be Held Between 6 April & 25 May, Says Hungary’s President
Under relevant laws, Hungary’s next general elections will be held between April 6 and May 25, 2014, President János Áder noted in a letter of reply to opposition Socialist leader Attila Mesterházy on Thursday, without specifying the exact date. Referring to his latest meeting with Áder, Mesterházy noted in a letter to him that the president had proposed holding consultations with the parties before setting a date.

Yet in the past few weeks, a Christian Democratic deputy and a Fidesz lawmaker suggested that the election would be held on April 6 next year. In his letter, Áder welcomed that “Mesterházy disapproves of politicians making statements in an effort to curb the constitutional powers of the president” but also voiced regret that the Socialist leader was “doing the same”.

The president said he would set the exact date in line with his legal obligations, with no regard to “opinions or assumptions”, and voiced hope that both Socialist and other politicians would “forbear from advancing decisions they have not constitutional power to make”.
