Consumer Price Index Inches Up in Hungary - Basic Food Prices Up Steeply Again
Hungary's annualised consumer price index reached 3.2pc in October, inching up from 3.0pc in the previous month, data released by the Central Statistics Office (KSH) on Tuesday show.

The KSH data show food prices rose 4.5pc in October. The price of flour jumped 38.9pc, milk prices rose 16.8pc and the price of eating out increased 7.6pc, but noodle prices fell 7.3pc, egg prices dropped 2.1pc and the price of sugar was 2.9pc lower.

Household energy prices fell 4.8pc. Gas prices were 9.5pc lower and electricity prices declined 0.7pc.

Consumer durable prices edged down 0.3pc.

Motor fuel prices fell 5.2pc.

Prices of spirits and tobacco products increased 3.8pc and clothing prices rose 3.1pc. Service prices increased 7.2pc.

Harmonised CPI, adjusted for better comparison with other European Union member states, was 3.4pc.

Core inflation, which excludes volatile fuel and food prices, was 4.5pc.

The CPI calculated with a basket of goods and services used by pensioners was 3.2pc.

In a month-on-month comparison, consumer prices edged up 0.1pc as motor fuel prices rose 0.8pc.

Commenting on the data, the National Economy Ministry said CPI had stayed at a "favourable, low" level in October.

National Economy Minister Marton Nagy noted that the government had kept in place some policy measures intended to bring down high inflation in 2023, such as an online platform for comparing prices at the biggest supermarket chains.

Persistently low inflation and a close to 10pc increase in real wages will contribute in large part to increased consumption and help to boost GDP growth over 3pc in 2025, he added.
