European Rabbinical Centre Meets In Hungary
Rabbi Slomo Köves stressed the importance of ensuring the survival of Jewish communities on Monday, the first day of the biannual general meeting of the Rabbinical Centre of Europe (RCE) in Budapest.

The strongest response to be given to the Holocaust on its 70th anniversary commemorated this year is “to ensure” that Jewish communities live today and continue to live on, rabbi Köves, the head of the Unified Hungarian Jewish Congregation (EMIH), told a press conference.

This is the main message of the Budapest conference, he said. Rabbi Menachem Margolin, the secretary of the RCE, said the biggest challenge faced by European Jewish communities today is that many Jews hide their identities out of fear rooted in the Holocaust.

Members of these communities must be convinced that they should be proud of being Jewish, he said, adding that Budapest has been selected as their conference venue as this year marks the 70th anniversary of the Hungarian holocaust. The two-day RCE general meeting is attended by 200 rabbis from all over Europe.
