Rusalka the water nymph is daydreaming on the banks of a lake, her desire being to know the love of a true human. Her words are heard by the water goblin, who warns her of the grave consequences should her wish come true.
Overhearing their conversation, the witch spells out these consequences: Rusalka may never speak to her human beloved and must accept being mute; in addition, if she ever returns to the world of water then it will mean the death of her lover. As Rusalka leaves with the witch, the Prince arrives to rest by the shore of the lake whilst out hunting.
Rusalka emerges from the witch's hovel, enchanting the Prince with her beauty, who happily embraces the mute girl…
