Fidesz Launches Online Petition In Support Of Hungarian Interests
Ruling Fidesz has launched an online petition with the aim of defending in Brussels the policies of protecting Hungarian farmland from speculators, making pálinka distillation tax free and protecting false acacia. Rural development minister Sándor Fazekas and director for Fidesz social relations Zsolt Nyitrai told a news conference on Thursday that the new government was prepared to fight the necessary battles in the European Union.

Fidesz plans to amend the forestry law to include a clause on protecting false acacia and honey from its blooms. Environmentalists say the plant is a non-indigenous species which can harm the local habitat.

The European Court of Justice in April ruled that Hungary’s law exempting producers of home-made pálinka (fruit brandy) from paying excise tax for the first 50 litres annually was against legal regulations of the European Union.

The Austrian government has asked the European Commission to review Hungary’s new land law, which came into effect on May 1, on grounds that it discriminates against Austrian farmers with land in Hungary.
