The Brussels-based European Institute of Peace will be set up with the participation of eight states, including Hungary, political director at the foreign ministry Szabolcs Takács, who participated in the meeting to elect the new institute’s steering committee, told MTI.
The body aims to contribute to managing and resolving crises in Europe and beyond, and to prevent the development of conflicts, he said.
Sweden and Finland initiated setting up the institute two years ago and they were soon joined by Hungary and Poland.
Since then, Belgium, Luxembourg, Italy, and non-EU member Switzerland have also joined, with Spain being represented in observer status.
