2. Greeting people
In formal situations, the following greetings and farewells are used:
Greetings
up to about 9 am: Jó reggelt! (Good morning.)
between 9 am and 7 pm: Jó napot! (Good morning/afternoon.)
after 7 pm: Jó estét! (Good evening.)
Farewells
any time of the day: Viszontlátásra! (Goodbye.)
late at night: Jó éjszakát! (Good night.)
In informal situations, use the following expressions, any time of the day:
Both greetings and farewells
Helló! (Hi!)
Szia! (Hi!)
if you address more than one person: Sziasztok! (Hi!)
Tip: When uncertain, wait to see which form the Hungarian speaker is using and do likewise.
