Latest Consumer Price Index Data in Hungary Revealed e.g. Eggs Up 27%
Hungary's annualised consumer price index fell to 4.2pc in April from 4.7pc in the previous month, data released by the Central Statistics Office (KSH) show.

Food prices rose 5.4pc.

The price of eggs jumped 26.9pc, flour prices increased 23.7pc and cooking oil prices climbed 23.4pc, but the price of margarin dropped 29.2pc and dairy products prices fell 7.5pc.

Household energy prices rose 3.5pc as piped gas prices climbed 7.2pc.

Consumer durable prices edged up 2.0pc.

Motor fuel prices fell 7.1pc.

Prices of spirits and tobacco products increased 6.3pc and clothing prices rose 1.6pc. Service prices were up 7.0pc.

Core inflation, which excludes volatile fuel and food prices, was 5.0pc.

The CPI calculated with a basket of goods and services used by pensioners was 4.2pc.

In a month-on-month comparison, consumer prices edged up 0.2pc. Food prices fell 1.3pc and motor fuel prices declined 1.4pc, but household energy prices rose 3.8pc.

In a comment on the fresh data, the National Economy Ministry highlighted the month-on-month drop in food prices and pointed to the impact of a government-mandated cap on markups on a range of food products at supermarkets.

CPI could fall further in the coming months, supported by a cap on markups of household products, in effect from May 19, as well as commitments by banks and telecommunications companies to freeze fees, and by insurers to freeze home policy premiums.

The ministry said the markups cap on household products could cut prices in the designated categories by 16-18pc. With pass-through, the measure could shave 0.4pp off headline CPI, it added.

The ministry pledged to take action against any "unjustified" price increases and said the aim was to bring headline CPI to 3-4pc and food price inflation under 5pc.
