Guest Nights by Domestic Travellers Drops in Hungary But More Foreign Visitor Stays
Guest nights at commercial and private tourism accommodations in Hungary fell 5.9pc to 2,665,000 in March from the same period a year earlier on seasonal effects, data released by the Central Statistics Office (KSH) show.

There were two long weekends in the base period, for Easter and the March 15 national holiday, but none in March 2025.

The number of guest nights spent by domestic travellers dropped 13.1pc to 1,164,000, while guest nights spent by foreign visitors edged up 0.7pc to 1,502,000.

Revenue of commercial accommodations, which include hotels, bed-and-breakfasts, camp sites, resorts and hostels, rose 6.2pc to HUF 69.1bn.

A total of 20,797 tourism accommodations hosted guests in March, including 18,618 private and other accommodations.

For the period January-March, the number of guest nights increased 1.1pc to 7,252,000 from the same period a year earlier. The number spent by domestic travellers fell 5.6pc to 3,170,000 and the guest nights spent by foreign visitors climbed 6.9pc to 4,083,000.

In a comment on the fresh data, the National Economy Ministry pointed to the impact on tourism of unseasonably cold and rainy weather in March.

It noted that HUF 36.2bn of commercial accommodations revenue in March was registered at destinations other than the capital.
