Eight Hit In Hungary By Outbreak Of Anthrax
Eight people are being treated in hospital in Debrecen with symptoms of anthrax contracted from illegally slaughtered and sold beef last week. Two cattle were slaughtered in violation of regulations at a Tiszafüred farm some days previously. It is believed that the farmers knew that the animals were ill, but did not notify the animal health authority.

They instead processed the meat and illegally sold it to a company that operates canteens.

Jász county police have questioned two suspects in the case.

If detected in time, anthrax may be cured with antibiotics. Kenézy hospital spokeswoman Beáta Lénárt said all eight anthrax patients are in generally good condition.
