Hungarian Farmers Grow More Water Melons
Hungarian farmers are now producing watermelons on 6,000 hectares compared with 4,700 in 2011, minister of agriculture Sándor Fazekas said, adding that 40-50% of the watermelons grown in Hungary are exported.

Head of fruit and vegetable growers’ association FruitVeb Béla Mártonffy said the aim is for Hungary to reconquer its markets and become the world’s third-biggest exporter of watermelons as it was in the early 2000s.

Meanwhile, this year’s harvest is expected to yield about 5 million tonnes of milling grade grain, Fazekas said. About half of the crop is expected to be exported. Hungary’s wheat crop was a little more than 5 million tonnes last year.
