Kúria Reduces Former Budapest District Mayor’s Prison Sentence To One Year
The Kúria, Hungary’s supreme court, on Tuesday reduced the prison sentence of former Socialist Budapest district mayor György Hunvald to 12 months from 18 months for property fraud. The Budapest municipal court of appeals in February 2012 sentenced him in connection with a property scam in the 7th district during his 2003- 2009 term.

Hunvald said after the decision that he is glad to put the past behind him, but he will resign his post as the head of the Socialist chapter for district 7 and that he will not run for district mayor in the autumn elections.

A local Fidesz politician, Mónika Rónaszéki Keresztes, said it is clear that Hunvald is guilty, and he abused his power at the expense of the district. She added that “nothing has changed on the left”.

Zoltán Szabó, former Socialist MP and former member of the leftist opposition Democratic Coalition (DK)’s presidium, said the trial was politically biased “from the first minute to the last”.
