Opposition Slams Hungary’s Govt Education Policy
Parliament’s opposition parties on Friday welcomed the resignation of the head of the body in charge of all state-run schools while slamming government changes to Hungary’s education system. The E-PM party alliance welcomed the resignation of Aranka Marek Pintér, reported by news portal Index earlier on Friday and confirmed by the Human Resources Ministry.

The party expressed hope that she would be succeeded by someone who could “put an end to the destruction and chaos” in Hungary’s public education. Socialist MP Ágnes Kunhalmi said “the problem is not the person but changes made to public education”.

Kunhalmi, vice chairwoman of parliament’s education committee, said government claims that the state transfer of schools from local governments under the control of a national manager (KLIK) had been “a real success story” were false. Radical nationalist Jobbik lawmaker Dóra Dúró said it was right that Marek Pintér had resigned but would not solve the problems of the education system which she called dysfunctional.

The green LMP party said that “the departure of the KLIK chief will not resolve anything”. Even after Marek Pintér, KLIK will remain a dysfunctional “alien body in the system” which needs to be reorganised.
