Parties In Final Furlong To Local Election In Hungary
Political parties are touring the country and Budapest districts intensively to win support for their candidates at the local elections set for Sunday, October 12. Incumbent Budapest mayor István Tarlós, backed by the ruling Fidesz party, on Tuesday inaugurated a 700 million forint (EUR 2.7m) heating system at the Military Hospital. Tarlós said that since 2010, Budapest’s governance had become “pragmatic”.

He announced environmental investment projects such as new waste management facilities, flood protection and water pipelines. Lajos Bokros, mayor candidate for Budapest of the leftist parties, commended József Tóth, a veteran Socialist mayor in the 13th district as an effective and transparent governor.

Tóth said his district, a stronghold of the Socialists and liberals, was an “island of peace”, and in the past 20 years 70,000 jobs had been created thanks to office-building investments. Green opposition LMP on Tuesday campaigned to close the infrastructure gap between the suburbs and the city agglomeration.

Socialist deputy head Roland Márton said that people on Sunday had the opportunity to cast their ballot against the government’s planned “austerity package worth 1.7 trillion forints” by voting for opposition candidates.

E-PM co-head Viktor Szigetvári, whose party backs Lajos Bokros, said that his party expected “many local victories” and more mayoral seats than in 2010.
