Xpat Opinion: Kehli Restaurant Budapest
When I stepped off the plane in Hungary with my guidebook in hand, Kehli was one of the first restaurants I discovered, located in the oldest part of Buda. It first opened in 1899 as a small family-style restaurant, serving hearty, traditional Hungarian food and has developed since then.

It is the place to go to try traditional Hungarian dishes, like the hot pot with bone marrow, and the fish soup; the goose leg with red cabbage and mashed potatoes is an absolute must. If you have a penchant for Hungarian cuisine, which I do, this is truly authentic stuff.

It is no surprise that it has attracted many famous people over the years, including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Woody Allen, Jimmy Carter, Roger Moore, Andy Vajna, James Belushi, Gerhard Berger, and many more.

And now, even after the many beers, wines, and palinkas I’ve had since I first came here, the food still tastes delicious and the portions are still very generous. And that is probably why people still keep coming back to one of jewels in the crown of Hungarian cuisine.
