Protesters In Hungary Demand Dismissal Of Tax Chiefs

Gábor Vágó, a former deputy of the green LMP party, referred to the United States’ banning senior Hungarian officials from the country as the greatest scandal of the past decade and demanded that the European Union should launch an investigation.
The crowd then left the NAV headquarters to walk to the economy ministry in József nádor Square.
Vágó addressed the crowd which he estimated at over 10,000, and said that the government had been reluctant to investigate reports of major tax fraud and repeatedly called on leaders of the tax authority to step down.
Unless they do so, another protest will be held on November 17 both in Budapest and in front of local NAV offices in the provinces, he said.
Former NAV officer András Horváth called on the authorities to launch an investigation into the alleged fraud cases rather than looking to the US for evidence.
“What we need is a new rule of law to suppress corruption,” Horváth insisted.
