President Assesses Frozen Rain Damage
- 9 Dec 2014 8:00 AM
Government and civil society must work together to help to tackle the damage to trees caused by last week’s freezing rain, President János Áder said. Examining the situation at a Pilis National Forest site near Pilisszentkereszt, he said the sight of the fallen and broken trees was “dramatic”.
He said an estimated 50,000 hectares of state-owned forest must be treated, which is about 5% of all forests owned by the state.
“The work of some 30-40 years has been shattered,” he said, adding that state support would be needed for the relief effort.
Freezing rain damaged forests in central Hungary, including some parts in Buda, in the first days of December.
