Hungarian Sports Leader To Become Member Of FINA Executive
Tamás Gyárfás, the Hungarian sports diplomat who is currently serving as deputy chairman of the International Swimming Federation, is to become a member of FINA Executive, the Federation’s closest decision-making group, following the 2015 World Aquatics Championships to take place this summer in the Russian city of Kazan.

At a meeting of the Bureau, FINA’s leading body, in Lausanne, Switzerland, Mr. Gyárfás and the Federation’s vice chairman representing the American continent Dale Neuberger were the two swimming leaders voted to become members of the six-person committee.

The group is in charge of making decisions in the most important issues concerning swimming, water polo, diving, open water swimming and synchronized swimming. It also prepares decisions defining the future of aquatics, the Hungarian state news agency MTI reports.

Mr. Gyárfás’s appointment is the highest post a Hungarian sports diplomat has reached within FINA since Leó Donáth’s period as Secretary-General between 1928 and 1941.

Tamás Gyárfás has been the chairman of the Hungarian Swimming Federation since 1993. He became vice chairman of the European Swimming League (LEN) in 2008 and the organisation’s head of finances in 2012. He has been a member of FINA’s executive committee in 2009; in 2013, he was elected as vice president of the organisation responsible for its communications activities.

His election comes one week after Hungary won the right to organise the 2021 World Aquatics Championships and the 2017 junior Swimming World Championships.
