The Minister greeted the Head of Mission as a former Ambassador and wished her success in her work. Mr Trócsányi emphasized that strengthening the Hungarian and American relations is a common interest of both countries. The Minister introduced the activities of the Ministry of Justice, its role in jurisdiction and in international and European legal affairs in line with the twofold mandate – to enhance trust in jurisdiction and to protect constitutional identity – entrusted on him by the Prime Minister.
The Minister emphasized that consultations have been held on draft legislations, not only Hungarian lawyers but also the American Chamber of Commerce have cooperated on giving opinions. His main role as a Minister is to constitute acts that correspond to constitutional and EU law and which provide eligible environment for enterprises.
László Trócsányi also presented the Hungarian system of protection of crime victims, in relation to which he asked for the contribution of the American counterpart in order to improve effectiveness. Colleen Bell, who carried out significant victim assistance activities, received the initiative with delight.
The Minister pointed out the importance of constitutional constraints and – as a former Constitutional Court member and professor of public law – he described the functioning of the Constitutional Court and presented the implementation of fundamental rights by means of practical examples. Just as the Ambassador asked, the parties reviewed the Hungarian system of notification of public interest as an important measure in the fight against corruption.
