Justice CTTEE Decides Against Parliamentary Probe Of VAT Fraud
Parliament’s justice committee voted against a proposal by opposition LMP to form an investigative committee to examine VAT fraud over the last eight years. LMP’s co-leader András Schiffer had wanted the investigation to focus on whether personnel changes within the tax authority since 2007 had meant VAT fraud had gone undetected.

Ruling Fidesz lawmaker Imre Vas said that such a committee could not be formed under the current law to examine a matter which belongs under the authority of the state auditor (ÁSZ).

Gergely Bárándy of the opposition Socialist Party said that it was not the case that the investigation of damages to the state amounting to one trillion forints should come under the purview of the state auditor, and he called on the government lawmakers to reveal why they preferred not to deal with the case.

After the committee session, Schiffer told journalists that the ruling party had “something to hide” in connection with “serial VAT fraud”.
