DK Calls On Govt To Stop Axing Popular University Courses In Hungary
The leftist opposition Democratic Coalition (DK) called on the government to withdraw its decision to eliminate several university courses in the social sciences from next year. Csaba Molnár, the party’s deputy leader, said that the government’s decision to remove these courses at Bachelor’s level from next year’s offerings was politically motivated and had no other reasonable explanation.

“These courses are popular and most of the students are fee-paying,” Molnár said, adding that scrapping these courses would badly hurt university revenues.

Molnár, also an MEP, said the government was openly attacking “education and knowledge” as it wants to see “busy underlings” rather than clever young people in the country.

He added that these types of moves could aggravate the situation of young people leaving Hungary for abroad en masse.

The human resources ministry announced last Friday a proposal for a new course structure in Hungary’s higher education.

The state secretariat in charge of higher education said the proposal aimed to tighten efficiency in financing education while meeting professional, social and economic needs.

The courses to be delisted include international relations; the office said this and some other subjects could be studied at Master’s level. The ministry said on Monday that the proposal for restructuring was not final.
