Border Fence Construction In Hungary Begins
Work began yesterday on construction of a fence along the Serbian border, with 43 soldiers engaged in erecting a 150-metre “test fence” near Mórahalom. Parliament approved the project on July 6, earmarking Ft 6.6 billion for construction of a planned 175km barrier.

The barrier will be only three metres high, not the four metres mentioned earlier, Népszabadság reports, adding that the project will be completed by November.

Prison inmates will make the so-called “NATO cylinder”, a 60-80cm roll of barbed wire to be placed atop the fence.

The mayor of Mórahalom, Zoltán Nógrádi, and the mayor of nearby Ásotthalom, far-right activist László Torockai, have been among the most vocal of those advocating a hard line against migrants in recent weeks.

It is mostly Afghan, Bangladeshi and Pakistani migrants who are entering Hungary illegally, the Interior Ministry said yesterday.

Police detained 2,858 illegal immigrants over the weekend.
