First Transit Area For Migrants Opens In Budapest
The first designated area in Budapest available to migrants opened in an underpass near Keleti railway station on Saturday, the municipal council’s chief law enforcement officer said. György Pető said the council ensures basic hygiene and medical services in the designated area. It is not possible to make migrants disappear from the city’s pavements and public spaces overnight but opening such transit areas makes it possible to reduce their presence outside them, he added.

Similar designated areas are planned to be opened at the Nyugati and Déli railway stations, Pető said earlier this week.

The radical nationalist Jobbik party said the migrants should not be hanging around Budapest’s railway stations and that there is “no sensible reason” that could justify turning the capital into a “refugee shelter”.

Adrián Magvasi, a district councillor, told a press conference that keeping the migrants near train stations could help them leave the city without delay but the interest of local residents is that the migrants should be placed outside residential areas.
