Golgotha Painting Covered In Hungary
- 1 Sep 2015 9:00 AM
Golgotha, the 19th-century painting by Mihály Munkácsy has been covered over at the Déri Museum in Debrecen, as its owner Imre Pákh has banned its further public display. Pákh brought the picture to Hungary for display along with the other parts of Munkácsy’s Christ trilogy, but the government declared the painting a protected artwork that cannot be exported after he rejected its purchase offer of $6 million.
Removal of the painting from the Debrecen museum will require a permit from the Forster Gyula Centre, the official cultural authority.
