Zoo Director Shoots Runaway Wolf In Pécs, Hungary
Pécs Zoo director Miklós Szatyor yesterday shot dead a wolf that escaped from the enclosure on Saturday. The wolf, which had arrived from an Italian zoo on the previous day, jumped over a 2.5-metre high fence at 10 a.m. Saturday as zookeepers were filling a watering hole. Authorities evacuated the surrounding woods as police and hunters began an unsuccessful search for the creature.

Shortly after the hunt was suspended on Sunday, tourists signalled that they had seen the wolf on the Tubes hill.

Szatyor himself eventually shot the animal dead yesterday afternoon.

He said zoo officials have no idea what caused the wolf to flee, although he surmised that the noise of machines from ongoing construction work at the zoo may have disturbed the animal.
